International Series Singapore
Major champion Patrick Reed is among a group of 22 LIV Golf members competing in this week’s International Series Singapore, the third event in an elevated series of tournaments on the Asian Tour.
Reed, the 2018 Masters champ, has been one of LIV Golf’s top performers since making his debut in Portland, Oregon. He’s finished third and fifth in his two starts, and his 4 Aces GC team, captained by Dustin Johnson, has won the team competition both times.
Having celebrated his 32nd birthday on the plane ride to Singapore, Reed said he is looking forward to competing in a country he had not previously visited. The tournament starts Thursday at the redeveloped Tampines Course at Tanah Merah Country Club.
“I’ve always loved experiencing new things, trying food and different cultures and making new friends in different places,” Reed said in this story on asiantour.com. “I can’t wait to experience the rest of the week and play a proper golf course, which can get challenging.”
LIV Golf has made a substantial commitment in the International Series, which will become a key component in helping to recognize and develop next-generation stars as well as provide playing opportunities for LIV Golf members. Asian Tour Commissioner Cho Minn Thant calls the International Series “a level up for the Asian Tour.”
Two tournaments have already been played in 2022.
In March at the International Series Thailand, Sihwan Kim won his first Asian Tour event. He followed that with another Asian Tour win in Thailand a month later.
Kim leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit. In his two LIV Golf Invitational starts, he finished 44th in London and 15th in Portland. He was also the captain of the Smash GC team in London.
“It has been a great experience,” Kim said about becoming a LIV Golf member. “It was a lot of fun. With guaranteed money and when you are playing for so much, you would think there is less pressure going into the tournament. But because you are playing for so much money, there is more pressure.”
In early June in the week prior to the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational London, Scott Vincent won the International Series England event at Slaley Hall, the first Asian Tour event played in the United Kingdom.
Vincent beat Australia’s Travis Smyth by a stroke to become the first player from Zimbabwe to win on the Asian Tour. He currently leads the International Series Order of Merit, just ahead of Kim.
Vincent and Smyth were among six players who qualified for LIV Golf Invitational London through their play on the International Series. The other four were India’s Viraj Madappa, Thailand’s Itthipat Buranatanyarat, South Africa’s Ian Snyman and Australia’s Kevin Yuan. All six are in the field this week in Singapore.
“The first two events … have been resounding successes,” said Cho Minn Thant. “Not only have they signified the beginning of our relationship with our strategic partner LIV Golf Investments, but they’ve also marked the start of what promises to be a phenomenal period of growth for the Asian Tour.”
Along with Reed, other notables among the 22 LIV Golf players in the field in Singapore include Peter Uihlein, who finished fourth in London and captained the Crushers GC to a second-place team result; Justin Harding and Phachara Khongwatmai, each inside the top 20 in prize earnings through the first three Invitational events; and Wade Ormsby, the captain of the all-Australian Punch GC.
The International Series schedule continues next week in Korea at Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club in Jeju Island. The LIV Golf Invitational Series resumes Sept. 2-4 in Boston.
